Gone are the days when models had to dress like a blank canvas for their various go-sees. This new crop of models are embracing their personal style and expressing their individuality through their fashion choices—be it with jeans and a tee, or a statement dress. Every month, Vogue is diving into the stylish wardrobe of a buzzy model of the moment, to see what they wear to their casting calls. This isn’t any old clothing haul!
This month, meet model Hejia Li. After being discovered back in 2021, Li made her first catwalk appearance for Bottega Veneta—not a bad starting gig. Li, who hails from Wenzhou in China’s southeastern province Zhejian, has since signed with The Industry Model Management and, this New York Fashion Week alone, has walked for labels including Tory Burch, Jason Wu, Proenza Schouler, and Altuzarra. She has also graced the cover of Vogue China, and starred in major campaigns for brands such as Louis Vuitton.
Below, Li discusses her discovery story, her favorite assignment to date, and what’s in her closet. (Hint: She doesn’t follow trends.)
Vogue: What was your discovery story?
Hejia Li: Back in 2021, I stumbled upon a golden opportunity. I sent my photos to my Chinese agency, Esee Model Management, and got called in for an interview, and decided to sign on when it felt right. Shortly after, I was walking for Matthieu Blazy’s Bottega Veneta fall 2023 show in Beijing.
What’s been your favorite job thus far?
One gig that stands out is the Louis Vuitton spring 2024 campaign. Always dreamed of shooting for them—it’s one of my favorite brands. Working with the models and incredible creatives like David Sims and Marie Amélie Sauve was a blast; they were all super chill.
How would you describe your personal style?
My style? Well, it’s pretty adaptable. It changes with my mood and the weather. I think it’s important to stay true to yourself rather than blindly following trends.
What’s your perfect casting look?
For castings, I like to keep it simple yet stylish. I’m rocking a top and skirt from a cool Chinese brand called Chip Chip Shop. It’s comfortable and confident—that’s the vibe I’m going for.
