If there’s ever a time when good beauty habits are put to the test, it’s the four-week-long stretch known as fashion month. As editors, photographers, and celebrities dash from show to show, city to city, certain tried-and-true rituals seem to fly out the window. Perhaps no one understands this better than models, who keep up a marathon pace of castings and late night fittings—that is, of course, when they’re not walking the runways. Like anybody, they are at times more successful than others in sticking to a good-for-you workout or caving to the call of a nightcap. Here, we ask six backstage favorites to share their beauty virtues—and their beauty vices—as we enter the final home stretch.
The Beauty Virtue:
“I drink so much water, and I use SK-II face masks obsessively—at least once a week, they’re so good. I moisturize with jojoba oil. I go see [the New York facialist] Ling once every four months—I’ve been going for years—and I also use her moisturizer. I also like juice from Juice Press.”
The Beauty Vice:
“I’m a nighthawk. I’m terrible, I stay up late. I’m not good at going to bed at all. Even if I’m at home, if I have a 6:00 a.m. call time, I am in bed at 1:00, 2:00, or 3:00 in the morning. It’s a family thing. My mom will text me at 4:00 a.m. I’ll be like, “Why are you awake?! Why am I awake?” My grandma is 80 and she does it too. Badass grandma. I get it from them."
The Beauty Virtue: “I usually walk a lot, and I exercise pretty much every day—it clears my mind and makes me feel really good. I do yoga and Ballet Beautiful. I’ve started playing tennis. I go running. Otherwise I get bored, and it just feels like a burden or something. I have to feel like I’m having fun.”
The Beauty Vice:
“I’m not a big drinker anymore, but I like to have a glass of wine—or more like tequila. But I don’t think that’s so much of a vice!”
The Beauty Virtue: “I always take my makeup off and moisturize at night because I’m a bit dry. I like Chanel Hydra Beauty moisturizer. It’s like a lotion.”
The Beauty Vice:
“I don’t exercise. That’s really quite bad. I just don’t like it, basically. But I should probably start doing a bit for health reasons. And I’m sitting here eating a croissant.”
The Beauty Virtue: “I always take off my makeup before going to bed. And I put on a lot of cream masks, so that really helps. I use the blue one by GlamGlow, which is insanely good. I even gave it to my mom, and she s like, ‘Oh my goodness, that s the best thing ever.’ I use a lot of Japanese hyaluronic, too, you know, the [sheet masks]. It s very cute when me and my roommate, we put it on and we re like two very fashionable girls in the masks at home. I always put a toner on, and then I use a special serum by La Mer. And I don t stress that much. That really destroys your health, your beauty, your youth.”
The Beauty Vice:
“The worst for your skin is to drink fizzy drinks like Coke or Sprite—which I do.”
The Beauty Virtue: “I m pretty organic, as much as I can, and avoid preservatives. Of course, when you re working and there s nothing else around, that s fine. But when I m cooking myself, pasta or anything, I’m making sure things are organic.”
The Beauty Vice:
“I drink too much coffee and too much champagne.”
The Beauty Virtue: “Every night I have to take off my makeup before I go to bed. I just hate the feeling of makeup. Usually I don’t wear it at all, nothing, just during shows. And I always wear lots of lip balm. It’s this French one, Homeoplasmine.”
The Beauty Vice:
“During Fashion Week, I have to wash my hair every day because of all the products; I guess I shouldn’t. I don’t put face cream often; actually almost never. Only sometimes when I feel it’s truly dry, but usually I’m like, ‘Eh, I’ll do it later!’”
