Last night, awards season continued on with the 52nd annual NAACP Image Awards, which aired live on BET and were hosted by actor Anthony Anderson (for the eighth year in a row). The evening honored the year’s best performances in film and television, specifically highlighting performances by people of color. Bridgerton’s Regé-Jean Page, Viola Davis, and Issa Rae all picked up trophies last night. On behalf of her late husband, Chadwick Boseman, Simone Ledward Boseman also accepted his posthumous award for outstanding actor in a motion picture, for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
Despite there being no red carpet for the event last night, stars still brought their fashion A-game for the televised affair. Both nominees and presenters embraced extremely glamorous looks. As is tradition for a virtual awards season, stars turned their backyards into photoshoot set to show off their looks. Leading the stylish pack was Regina King, who was nominated for best director for One Night in Miami. She wore a custom Oscar de la Renta frock that had a show-stopping bow on the back. It was a dress that makes an exit as well as an entrance. Custom was indeed the word of the night: Viola Davis—who won for outstanding actress in a motion picture for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom—also sported a colorful floral Duo Olowu gown that was made for her, finished with a peplum waist and floor-length skirt.
Equally elegant was Cynthia Erivo, nominated for best supporting actress for The Outsider. She wore a Lanvin dress with a caged bodice and pleated pink skirt. Tracee Ellis Ross, nominated for outstanding actress in a motion picture for The High Note, also had one of the most thoughtful outfits of the night. In an Alberta Ferretti jumpsuit, she accessorized with bold jewelry by Tiffany Co. x Elsa Peretti, her way of paying homage to the late jewelry designer, who was known for her sculptural pieces. On a more casual front, Yara Shahidi, nominated for outstanding actress in a comedy series for Grown-ish, also took part in the ceremony while wearing a monogrammed Dior loungewear suit. Looks like formal PJs are here to stay.
