A New Trailer for Barry Shows Barack Obama, the College Years

For a president who hasn’t even left office yet, there sure have been a lot of films made about Barack Obama. Following up on August s romantic-minded feature Southside with You, which followed the love story between the not-yet president and First Lady, comes a new story with a far more focused take.

Barry, directed by Vikram Gandhi, follows Obama at Columbia University, where he transferred in 1981. The film, which explores themes of race and identity through one particularly charming, and historically important hero (played by Devon Terrell), premiered to raves at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September, where the director told The A.V. Club, “There’s a feeling of, this is a decent human, like a good person . . . before being a great person. I think that is something we are all going to miss. I just never imagined that we would miss him so much because I never imagined a man named Trump would ever be possibly elected.” Barry debuts on Netflix on December 16. Watch the trailer above.
