PhotoVogue Festival 2023: The Talks
This conversation took place on November 19th 2023 as part of the PhotoVogue Festival 2023 which centered around the theme “What Makes us Human?: Image in the Age of A.I.”
Engman will lead a comprehensive discussion on the creative and commercial implications of AI in visual art. Drawing from his own experiences and expertise, he ll illustrate how AI serves as a powerful lens for exploring various aspects of art creation. Delving into the processes, ethics, applications, and potential consequences of human-AI collaboration in visual content generation, this presentation offers a unique opportunity to understand AI s impact on the creative world. Engman will tackle questions about AI s role in art, its influence on commercial ventures, and its potential to reshape visual expression. Is AI a savior, opening new artistic frontiers, or a potential disruptor challenging human creativity s authenticity? Engman will guide us through this captivating exploration of AI s role in shaping the visual landscape.
Charlie Engman is a New York-based artist, photographer, and art director whose work pushes the limits of traditional image making, simultaneously principled and irreverent. Engman draws inspiration from his degree in Japanese and Korean studies from the University of Oxford and his training in modern dance. He is a recognized leader in the world of AI art. His work has been shown in a range of venues including Lisson Gallery, Company Gallery, and FOAM Museum and featured across Vogue Magazine, The New York Times, Interview, The New Yorker, Dazed, and POP, among other publications. His commercial clients include Prada, Gucci, Hermès, Calvin Klein, Acne, Nike, Vivienne Westwood, and Stella McCartney. Engman has worked as Art Director at the sustainable fashion brand Collina Strada since 2019.
“A.I.: Savior or Destroyer?” is part of day 3 “A.I. dreamscapes: Art, Fashion, and the Liberation of Creativity" of the Symposium taking place at BASE Milano on Sunday 19th November.
