If there’s anything Rabanne is known for, it’s a party dress—preferably one with silver or gold discs, or in a space-age style. So, when creative director Julien Dossena decided to work with H&M Home on a capsule collection (to accompany his fashion collaboration with the Swedish retail giant), he knew that his decor was meant for a party house: one that is a sanctuary by day, but a social setting by night. “I wanted to design items that would be useful at a big gathering of friends,” Dossena says.
Dossena first looked to the past to create his fun-filled present. A 1970s line of metallic furniture designed by founder Paco Rabanne provided ample inspiration. Dossena also looked to Helmut Newton photographs from the same decade, as well as house codes like chainmail and paillettes. (“The Rabanne house codes played into the mood of instinctive fun that I wanted to create,” he says.) After all his research, he dreamt up a vision of a ’70s pool party and the many objects you might require to throw one. “I designed pieces for the people drinking cocktails by the pool, the people swimming, the people playing cards on the sofa in a corner,” he says. Yet, he also “didn’t want the capsule to feel nostalgic or retro.” Like he does with his designs, he took painstaking care to make sure everything was imbued with modern touches.
The result? A 28-piece collection that is unmistakably Rabanne. Metal goblets take the shape of classic red Solo cups—a staple at any American House party—whereas playing cards come in a sleek silver case along with a matching set of dice. Candleholders come in metallics, and curtains in sequin paillettes. (As does a lamp.) It’s glamorous, it’s futuristic, and it’s also surprisingly functional. “I’m quite a pragmatic designer and I like my clothes to be comfortable and wearable, so that sense of practicality came quite naturally to me,” says Dossena, who makes his first foray into homeware with this collection.
There’s towels and loungewear, too, for those guests who dared a nighttime jump into the pool—all adorned with a “PR” logo, of course. And if one wants to make more of a textile statement, a sea-foam green and black rug comes in a bold geometric print. “The collection is about creating a mood of instinctive, inclusive fun,” Dossena says.
