Marcus Wainwright’s love affair with leather jackets dates back 15 years to when he first came to America and stumbled into a secondhand shop—and upon a Schott vintage Perfecto. “It’s something that everyone should absolutely have—the perfect leather jacket,” says the Rag Bone cofounder, whose obsession quickly materialized to an ever-evolving personal collection that presently amounts to a dozen. “It’s been my mission to perfect the timeless piece,” he adds—and where better to go than straight to the source?

Out of the closet it comes: An all-American Schott perfecto jacket (Wainwright spent countless hours in the label’s archive studying styles once adorned by the likes of James Dean, Marlon Brando, the Ramones, Blondie, and the Sex Pistols) refined with Rag Bone’s time-tested outerwear treatment. Translation: A perfectly worn-in jacket (though there’s no years-long break-in period necessary: Wainwright points out that it will only get better with age) that’s cut in a slouchy-chic silhouette and finished off with the finest hardware, elbow patches, and exposed tape zippers.

While it’s not the most utilitarian by bike-riding standards—by my own estimation, it’s more suitably paired with a floral midi dress than a motorcycle—it reflects both old-school charm and fashion-forward sensibility. That’s what I call the perfect fit.
