The couture and men s collections have just wrapped in Paris and New York City, respectively, but the fall runways were filled with looks that take cues from a bohemian, musical influence. From Gucci s reimagining of the seventies, to Balmain s nod to eighties club culture, fashion houses are bopping to the beat of their own designs. And now, reworking the notion of decade-centric dressing are Rihanna and Rita Ora, who’ve recently taken to the streets with their own haute updates on nineties hip-hop fashion.

RiRi s late-night comings and goings from the recording studio constitute a veritable runway for followers of her rapidly evolving style: From girly slip dresses to skater-inspired ensembles, the 27-year-old continues to push the sartorial envelope. And last week saw her marry a menswear style with unexpected feminine flourish. Playing with a similar boxy silhouette like the Maison Margiela suit she sported at the Grammy Awards, the singer opted for a wide-leg, high-waisted trouser from Jean Paul Gaultier. The built-in braces recalled styles favored by singer Aaliyah, and Rihanna’s Chanel platforms grounded her look with a modern edge.

Taking the nineties hip-hop vibe one step further was singer Rita Ora at the X Factor auditions at London’s Wembley Stadium earlier this weekend. The leather trim of her dark wash Marni crop top added a luxe touch, while high-waisted bell-bottom jeans lent a cool, flattering hip-hugger silhouette. A retro topknot and Ora s signature bold red lip completed the hip-hop turned glam image.
