Coach 1941’s first-ever Pre-Fall collection is arriving in stores this month. And like the collection’s creative director, Stuart Vevers, has done so far for the 75-year-old brand, it’s got a true-blue all-American vibe. Vevers’s references have run the gamut from Bonnie Cashin silhouettes to the dusty plains of South Dakota to the über-American preoccupation with space travel that birthed the designer’s first It item for the label: a chunky sweater with the Apollo 11 rocket on it, a dead ringer for the style worn by Danny Torrance in The Shining.
So how did a Yorkshire-born designer with a CV that includes European brands like Bottega Veneta, Louis Vuitton, and Loewe become such an encyclopedia of American obsessions? We’ll let him do the explaining, as he picks out the places, people, and films that inspired his Pre-Fall lineup.
