Lest I invoke the rage of the Swifties, I am well aware that – technically speaking – the Evermore plaid comprises a wide-paned, pumpkin check. But the double-breasted, tweed coat Taylor Swift wore while “stepping out” in New York yesterday evening also happens to be from Stella McCartney and so the similarities, I think, are feasible. ‘Tis, after all, The Damn Season. I also know that Swift has been wearing plaid long before she started to conspire about warm cabin getaways and forest dreamlands.

The musician wore that Stella McCartney coat with a coordinating miniskirt, compounding the specific strain of New England preppiness that has defined her 2023 wardrobe – all diamond-patterned tights and satchels. The sparkle of Vrai lab-grown diamond earrings may distract you, but zoom in closer and you will see something a little more experimental occurring: a pair of Jimmy Choo and Jean Paul Gaultier’s collaborative heels, which have been constructed with a kitsch, laser-engraved Eiffel Tower wedge, handcrafted in plexiglass.

Less Cinderella’s slippers, more gift-shop paperweight, this might represent a sea change in Swift’s “relatable” and “accessible” approach to fashion: where every Miu Miu skirt is balanced with frilly socks and GH Bass Mary-Janes, every pair of The Row’s Eglitta pants with sensible Sezane loafers. And it might be the first time culture has ever witnessed Taylor Swift in a so-called “wrong shoe”. Could Swift – who has never claimed to be a style plate – be taking her first steps towards Paris?
