The couture shows are a highly intimate affair attended by a short list of the world s most stylish women—you only have to take one look at at the fashion happening off the runways (and on the sidewalk this week in Paris) for proof. And yet there was a time when street style photographers weren t stationed at every corner, when rare and beautifully dressed creatures like Nan Kempner and Anna Piaggi strode through the Tuileries unnoticed. Pictured here alongside supermodel Christy Turlington Burns and Christian Dior jewelry designer Victoire de Castellane, Piaggi and Kempner struck dashing figures when they were photographed for Vogue in 1990 by Arthur Elgort. That look of early nineties opulence would still hit all the right notes on the front row today.
