Why go here?

A Victorian mansion ensconced in the rolling hills of a 470-acre estate in Surrey, the Beaverbrook hotel has a bucolic setting that’s like something out of a Turner painting. And though the hubbub of central London is only a stone’s throw away—the train ride from Waterloo is a little over an hour—it feels a world apart from the big city. Which is exactly the point, says Charmaine Harbour, director of the Coach House, the hotel’s spa. “The idea is to optimize the health and well-being of our guests by authentically reconnecting to nature and our inner natural state of harmony,” she says. To that end, many of the most memorable wellness experiences here lean into the natural rhythm of the seasons. The summer solstice retreat is a good example and takes mindful movement, breath work, and meditation into the wilds of the English countryside.

What’s the vibe?

While the hotel itself projects an old-world grandeur, the spa, a converted stable, has a more down-to-earth charm. Renowned British stained glass artist Brian Clarke designed the impressive glass ceiling, and its delicate wildflower motif is inspired by those found growing on the estate: roses, daffodils, primroses, and cherry blossom to name a few. The colorful pools of light that flood the space bring the beauty of the great outdoors inside. Wander beyond the pool and into the woods and you’ll discover a tiny annex treatment room that’s especially tranquil.

The history?

As the former residence of press baron Lord Beaverbrook, the hotel has a pretty storied past. For the last decade, however, it’s been in the hands of hoteliers Ollie Vigors and Joel Cadbury, part of the family that founded the beloved British chocolate brand. The pair tapped Van Eyssen, an alum of famed Asian hospitality brand Aman, to curate the spa’s program, which reflected her thoughtful and holistic approach to wellness.

What should you try?

It’s well worth booking in with the Coach House’s resident naturopath, Camilla Dos Santos. An athlete turned functional medicine expert, she focuses on reinvigorating the mind-body connection through breath work, Qi Gong, and a highly personalized supplement and nutritional plan. There are several “visiting masters” in rotation at the Coach House, among them Amanda Porter, a specialist in the Mayan practice of abdominal massage therapy. For those looking to improve their fertility, gut, or immune health, her 90-minute consultation and massage treatment are truly transformative.

How environmentally friendly is it?

You’ll find a really thoughtful range of artisanal, locally sourced, and small-batch wellness brands at the spa’s shop, including the likes of Therapi, a sustainable skin-care brand that supports bee conservation—founder Tanya Hawks is an ethical beekeeper. The Coach House also has its own line of tincture blends created by medical herbalist Jo Dunbar in collaboration with Dos Santos.

What else do we need to know?

The restaurants at Beaverbrook are exceptional, so be sure to leave some time for a lazy lunch between spa treatments. The tasting menu at the Japanese grill in the main house is a special treat.

Who can go?

You don’t have to be a guest at Beaverbrook to make a reservation at the spa. And given its proximity to London, the spa day packages are particularly enticing for city dwellers. There’s also a membership program that includes a comprehensive health check and personal training sessions, among other perks.
