“Disheveled” is not a term one expects to hear when discussing the beauty look created for Victoria Beckham’s fall 2015 collection, but this morning at the Cunard Building, that’s exactly how makeup guru Pat McGrath referred to the “left-over” eyeliner and bare skin she executed for the designer’s runway show. Hair, too, was simultaneously “effortless” and “tough,” said Guido Palau of his finger-raked loose knot. But, in true Victoria Beckham form, each detail of her lived-in look was decidedly luxe. When it comes to mastering the British designer’s brand of polished ease, there are a few key rules we took from today’s show.
Rule #1: Invest in Your Skin Care
Before undergoing a sooty application of McGrath’s smudged black eyeliner backstage, models applied vitamin-rich and hydrating SK-II Facial Treatment masks. “The dryer the skin, the more time we spent on skin care,” said McGrath. “Then we used foundation depending on each girl’s need.”
Rule #2: Think of Your Eye Makeup as an Opportunity to Accessorize
Just before the cast hit the runway, McGrath added a wash of burgundy pigment—a tone that was echoed on the runway in the designer’s mahogany ankle boots—at the center of the models’ lids to heighten the intensity of their morning-after eye makeup for a bit of “decadence.”
Rule #3: You Need a Blow-Dryer With The Horsepower of a Sports Car
Prior to creating a bit of gritty texture, Palau gave the girls’ hair a silken finish by massaging Redken’s Satinwear 02 into their damp strands, then blasting them with a BaByliss blow-dryer. “The secret to smooth blowout is drying it as quickly as possible,” he said. “This has a Ferrari motor.”
Rule #4: If Necessary, Get Your Hands Dirty
Rather than spraying the hair directly with product to seal in the style, Palau misted his fingers with Redken Forceful 23 finishing spray then used them as a comb to create an imperfect grooved ponytail for a textured, effortless feeling.
Rule #5: You Can, In Fact, Improve on Perfection
Nails were polish-free and buffed to a high shine—then given a subtle, muted matte topcoat for the ultimate understated manicure. Because nature occasionally needs some help.
