It’s not often that New Yorkers are surprised. However, last night in Lower Manhattan, even the commuters couldn’t believe their eyes. The reason? The opening of the Westfield World Trade Center shopping center inside the Santiago Calatrava–designed Oculus. And while some might question a mall in the city, this isn’t your garden-variety emporium. Guests including Apple’s Angela Ahrendts, who was in the building earlier that day toasting Apple’s latest store; Gayle King; and Leslie Odom, Jr., fresh off his Tony Award win, took in the artful setting and surprise performances.
Before migrating to the newly opened Eataly, John Legend jumped onstage and belted out his hits to the crowd and passersby who happened to be on their way home. After a rousing set and earlier performances from the Harlem Gospel Choir and the cast of School of Rock, it was time to sample the fine food offerings and indulge. But not before a bit of shopping.
