Yuka Mannami lives in an East Village loft with exactly one pair of jeans in her closet. “To me, denim is something you wear to a casting, or something to wear when you leave the house,” she says. “For example, I’ll wear denim to a picnic, or recently, I wore jeans to go bouldering.” (Given the Japanese model’s penchant for floor-length black skirts and gothic Lolita lace dresses, it’s perhaps not surprising that denim would count as athleisure.)
“My favorite type of jeans have a lot of pockets—this is a pocket,” she says, flipping one open on her Balenciaga jeans, “and this is also a pocket. I can carry my phone and my keys and lipstick, and when it’s hot, there’s a zipper here and they can become shorts!” So practical and chic, no wonder you only need one.
