Despite the challenges that many New York brands have faced this past year, Snow Xue Gao’s flagship shop on the Bowery is still seeing a lot of customers come in and out. The wool coats are some of the most popular items the label sells, according to the designer, because they’re not only made right here in New York but are affordably priced compared to other contemporary brands.
This season, new in the lineup was a faux-fur coat. After the success of the plaid wool version, Gao was inspired by the young women who walk past her store in furry jackets to create one that was even softer without breaking the bank. Combined with real wool, the Snow Xue Gao “fur” jacket comes in at around $400 and doesn’t have the plastic-like feel of many polyester blends you’ll find at high-street stores. In addition to the coats, other notable pieces included going-out essentials like miniskirts in a multitude of neutral colors and Fair Isle sweaters. To stay true to the brand’s roots, though, there were still floral embroideries on winter knits layered under the furry outerwear.
