This Week’s Best Dressed Stars Embodied a New Kind of Glamour

While attending movie premieres across the globe, walking the Croisette at the Cannes Film Festival, and sitting front row at resort shows from Gucci and Balenciaga, celebrities played dress-up over the past few days. Key word being “play.” Many chose to rebuke traditional gowns for their appearances in favor of more avant-garde silhouettes that packed a punch.

Miley Cyrus kicked things off at the beginning of the week when she appeared at the NBC Upfronts in New York City wearing a handful of vintage John Galliano-era Dior dresses. Her best was a silky, bias-cut red gown with a dainty chain belt. True New Yorker Chloë Sevigny attended Balenciaga’s resort 2023 show in a draped floral-print dress by the label with the leggings and heels to match. Both stars managed to take a vintage sensibility—Cyrus the grungy ’90s gown, Sevigny the retro wallpaper print—and make them feel entirely fresh and modern. Dakota Johnson did the same at the Gucci show in Puglia, with her take on giant ’70s aviator shades.

In Cannes, meanwhile, the step and repeats were filled with risk-takers. Just take French singer Yseult, who attended the Three Thousand Years Of Longing premiere in a Schiaparelli white coat-dress with a built-in cone bra, a mini bag with a chiseled chest built into it, and leather boots with built-in gold toes. Pure camp! On a more discreet note, Tilda Swinton attended the R.M.N. premiere in a white, floor-length shirtdress by Alaïa, while Armageddon Time star Anne Hathaway set the internet ablaze in an elegant Armani Privé column gown, complete with a giant back bow. All these striking ensembles channeled the drama that a Cannes carpet demands—without falling into the tulle or sequin gowns that are expected.
