All the Black Tie Looks at Last Night’s The Albies—Amal! Meryl! Doja!

Last night, the steps of the New York Public Library at Bryant Park were aglow. Yes, in candles that ascended the stairs but more so with the star wattage that turned up to the third-annual The Albies—George and Amal Clooney‘s charitable foundation named after the anti-apartheid hero Albie Sachs.
The ceremony honors those who, like the awards’ namesake, have devoted their lives to justice at great personal risk. Attending the star-studded bash alongside its organizers (which includes president of the Ford Foundation, Darren Walker) were Doja Cat, Meryl Streep, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Gabrielle Union, Cate Blanchett, and Donatella Versace. (The latter had dressed Amal in a gorgeous black velvet gown for the night.)
“Tonight, we get to honor people who are really doing the hard work—and they re risking their lives and their freedom to do it,” George told Vogue. “So this is a big night for us to shine a light on other people.”
After walking up the steps famously flanked by lions Patience and Fortitude, guests took their seats for a gala supper and to watch Jon Stewart, Emily Blunt, John Oliver, and more call to the stage the 2024 The Albies Awards recipients Luis Carlos Díaz, Nadia Murad, Memory Banda, Yael Braudo-Bahat, Dolores Huerta, and Reem Soud Jebreen Alhajara.
Later on in the night, the palm tree-filled room in the historic library transitioned from the dining room to the dance floor with special performances by Sting and Mumford and Sons. There was much to celebrate, including the 10th wedding anniversary of The Albie’s famous couple-founders.
