Blanket Statements in Fashion, From Norma Kamali to Alexander McQueen
The hoodie isn’t the only item of clothing that’s getting a luxe makeover at London Fashion Week. Earlier this evening, at theAlexander McQueen show, Sarah Burton gave the blanket coat, a variation of the down-filled puffer, a complete revise. Sandwiched between down–cum–bed jackets, the penultimate look in the collection was a duvet coat worn over a wisp of a slip dress. Who wouldn’t want to sink into the warm softness of this marabou-trimmed topper embroidered with delicate butterflies and flowers? It recalled both the exotic fantasies introduced to fashion by turn-of-the-century design legend Paul Poiret, and, more recently, Norma Kamali, whose sleeping bag coats are a longtime signature. Cuffing season, it seems safe to say, has never looked quite as cozy or luxurious. Here, we look back at the memorable blanket coats through time.
