Inside Aly AJ’s Eventful New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week came roaring back last week, and so did the front-row regulars. At the shows, Eiza Gonzalez, Katie Holmes, and Dan Levy all made an appearance. But if there was one coordinating couple to watch, it was Aly and AJ Michalka. The pop duo touched down in Manhattan to take in the collections of Collina Strada, Peter Do, Monse, and more—and all the while, they served up complementary ensembles that were twice as nice. Even better yet, the singers took Vogue along for the ride during their hectic—yet totally fabulous—week.
“It’s been so much fun,” says AJ of their fashion-filled week these past few days. “We’ve never really experienced Fashion Week properly before—we’ve always been either filming at the time or on tour.” Calling themselves “mega fashion lovers,” the duo says they wanted to cram in seeing as many new collections as they could while in town. “We wanted to support designers that we have been fans of since day one or designers that are hanging in our closets,” adds Aly.
Their week started with the Collina Strada show in Brooklyn, where they blended in to the show by sporting groovy knit vests and puff-shoulder tops. “The show was so visually stimulating, and it had such an incredible energy to start off Fashion Week,” says Aly. “That sense of community and love just felt so right for the moment.” Then it was on to check out Peter Do—one of the duo’s favorite designers—where they sported Do’s cropped bolero jackets and high-waist trousers. “The quality behind his tailoring and the fabrics is just nuts—it’s next-level,” says Aly. “He’s going to be someone that is around for many years.” The Monse show and the Saks Fifth Avenue bash were other highlights, as was their free time grabbing burgers at P.J. Clarke’s and checking out the new Christian Dior exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum.
Over the course of their eventful week, the two sisters say they enjoyed experimenting with their style. They realized they share more in common fashion-wise than they thought—Aly says she’s the more casual one, while AJ is more dressy. “Our younger selves would be so confused that we’re leaning into matching or semi-matching,” says Aly. “We hated that. Our parents would get us the same things in multiple colors.” AJ adds that Aly is truly the fashion sibling and that she has honed their style onstage over the past couple of years. “[Matching outfits] looks really good onstage—it’s cohesive,” says AJ.
Speaking of music: The pair also just released their new single, titled Get Over Here. “I really love the production of this song,” says Aly. “It’s just really fun, flirty, and sexy.” They’re also putting out a deluxe version of their album, A Touch of the Beat, early next year. “I’m really proud of each song—they all have heavy meanings to us,” says AJ. They begin rehearsing for the album’s official tour in January as well. “We’re excited,” says AJ, who adds that touring takes a lot of prep work—both physically and mentally. “Being really active and staying physically fit is really important. But it’s hard: We love food.” Good advice for anyone, pop star or otherwise.
