She says the first question to ask is, “Is this likely something you’ll wear daily, or—if this isn’t your first watch—at least a few times a week?” If yes, you’ll want to make sure you select a timepiece that feels versatile enough to wear with any outfit and ensure the style fits within your go-to aesthetic. In other words, “If you only wear yellow gold jewelry, don’t buy a rose gold watch.”
If you want a watch that doesn’t feel too trendy, pay close attention to the size. “I would hazard against something too big or too small, stay in between the 29-36mm case,” Shaw-Ellis says. “The larger of the two is more of a gender-neutral size without getting too big or bulky (not to mention heavy).” Smaller options make wonderful options for evening wear.
Finally, you’ll want to take a close look at the band. A watch with a leather strap, as opposed to a metal, means you’ll likely experience some wear-and-tear over the years. As a result, you may need a replacement every two-or-so years. Shaw-Ellis says it’s not a huge deal or expense, but that’s definitely something to take into account. If you go with a bracelet, customization is key. Shaw-Ellis says to, “have them size it to your wrist so it doesn’t jam into the top of your hand whenever you move your arm.”
