The Best Vintage and Vintage-Inspired Looks From Oscars Night

While there have been a series of stand-out vintage looks this awards season, the 2024 Oscars red carpet was rather sparse on the archival front—save for a few notable exceptions, including Carey Mulligan in a recreation of a 1951 Balenciaga gown. Archival remakes have been a popular choice on the red carpet of late, particularly when the original dress is too delicate to wear (or, as in this case, is in an actual museum).
At the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party, though, there were plenty of vintage looks on display, including Margot Robbie’s embellished gold corset from Thierry Mugler’s spring 1996 collection and Cardi B’s beaded Atelier Versace gown from spring 2003. Meanwhile, Jennifer Lawrence and Sydney Sweeney both opted to pay tribute to fashion history: the former sported a white lace Givenchy gown from the fall 1996 couture collection, originally worn by Kate Moss on the runway, while the latter chose an archival Marc Bouwer gown that Angelina Jolie first wore to the Academy Awards 20 years ago, in 2004.
