A Peruvian-Japanese Holiday Bash Ended with Karaoke at the SoHo Home of Sofia Sanchez de Betak

A pair of life-sized E.T. figurines, a Sake fountain, a traditional Chabudai dining table, and a mirrored karaoke room, complete with a shiny chrome pole, can all be found, on an average day, inside the SoHo home of Sofia Sanchez de Betak—better known as @Chufy to her friends and followers—but last night, things got even more festive with the addition of some Peruvian flare. “I bought these center table runners with the appliqués in Peru when I was traveling, and they were meant to go on clothes that I was going to make,” de Betak told us, clutching a piñata in the shape of a smiling llama. “So, it was an inspiration, and now it’s table decor.”

Inspired by her recent trek to Peru with The Luxury Collection, de Betak opted for a Peruvian-Japanese dinner party to launch her latest collection of Chufy-branded ready-to-wear items. “I wanted an exotic trip that wasn’t too far for the baby; I mean it was too far, but she loved it, and we took her to Machu Picchu,” she added. “We organized an incredible itinerary, and the hotels were so beautiful, so it was super inspiring, and I actually designed two collections there. Resort and Spring/Summer are both inspired by Peru.”

De Betak was also assisted in no small part by Llama San, the Peruvian-Japanese West Village hotspot that had garnered a glowing three-star review from The New York Times just a few days earlier. Chufy’s pals, including Olivia Palmero, Roopal Patel, and Sophie Auster, dined out on inventive dishes like Swiss chard and beef empanadas and sea trout ceviche paired with crispy wontons. However, it was the unexpectedly tasty matcha pisco sour garnished with a shiso leaf that kept the party rolling past the dessert course and into the karaoke den, where the lights were turned off, and the microphones were fired up for some rollicking renditions of ’90s classics. Luckily, despite the enthusiasm of each and every partygoer, everyone agreed to stick to their day jobs.
