Diotima’s Rachel Scott Takes Vogue Home to Jamaica for a Summer Holiday

Rachel Scott launched Diotima in May of 2021. In two short years she’s created a distinct design language centered on her artisanal crochet pieces, which have been worn by the likes of Doja Cat, Gabrielle Union, and Keke Palmer. A CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist this year, she makes many of her clothes in her home country of Jamaica, presenting a nuanced but alluring vision of Caribbean style grounded in her own lived experience.

Scott’s collection is named after Diotima of Mantinea, a character in Plato’s Symposium that teaches the philosopher about Eros. It’s unclear if she was an actual historical figure or a writerly invention, but Diotima’s ideas about love are very much alive in Scott’s work and her relationship with Jamaica. This summer, the New York-based designer escaped the city for a Caribbean holiday, spending time in the buzzing Kingston, the enchanting Negril, and the vibrant turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. She took Vogue along to discover her version of Jamaica—one you can’t help to fall in Eros with.
