I procured my first fluffy, faux-fur bucket hat from my mother’s wardrobe a few years ago. The super-soft, black faux-fur topper had become a relic in her closet (though it got her through many blistering Chicago winters) and she passed it on to me, unknowing that the hat would eventually become a highly coveted accessory.
Around 2017, UK-based designer Emma Brewin single-handedly brought the fuzzy bucket hat back into the trend cycle with her candy-colored, handmade iterations worn by the likes of Rihanna and Adwoa Aboah. In the years since, the style has only gained popularity with the fashionable set for its outfit-punctuating abilities, its polished aesthetic, and its sheer warmth. R13, Prada, Acne Studios, and designer Benny Andallo are a few of the many who have released their takes on the faux-fur bucket hat. While some of the coziest accessories on the market (think: puffer scarves and knit beanies) look out of place come spring, a fuzzy bucket hat (when styled correctly!) will look just as good most any season.

This winter, my mom’s black fuzzy bucket has proven itself an everyday essential and wardrobe lynchpin. I wear it to the office, out to dinner, and even keep it fixed to my head at parties long after I’ve shed my coat. While it was first a fun way to keep warm, it’s now the accessory I get the most compliments on and inquiries about. In fact, as I was writing this piece, a colleague sent me a screenshot of a DM that inquired about the hat.
