All the Winners Posed With Their Oscars at the Governors Ball After-Party

As the 92nd Academy Awards drew to a close last night, so did the 2020 awards season, and the star-studded crowd at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the site of the ceremony, were clearly ready to kick back and party as they made their way up from the theater to the Ray Dolby Ballroom to the first party of the night—the Oscars Governors Ball.

While more than 3,400 guests attended the ceremony, only 1,500 scored an invite to the after-party, where industry bigwigs and past nominees mingled with that night’s winners, clutching their brand-new golden statuettes. Guests were greeted with glasses of Piper-Heidsieck Champagne and Don Julio Tequila Nominees’ Negroni and Hollywood Highball cocktails, created by curated by mixologist Charles Joly—although most headed straight to the giant raw bar, famished after the three-hour show.

As was the trend this awards season, the menu, overseen by chef Wolfgang Puck, was largely plant-based (something that must have pleased best-actor winner Joaquin Phoenix, who used his acceptance speech to condemn the dairy industry and advocate for veganism). Waitstaff walked the room serving up trays of mushroom Bolognese, cauliflower toast, and avocado tostadas to the like of Cynthia Erivo, Greta Gerwig, Tom Hanks, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. That said, the caviar-topped tater tots, truffle chicken pot pie, and fried chicken and waffles elicited the most raves from the hungry crowd. To drink, guests sipped on a special-edition Champagne by Piper-Heidsieck—the bubbly makers paid tribute to the talkies with a limited-edition cuvée brut magnum featuring a label once used during the Prohibition era.

Elsewhere in the room, Leonardo DiCaprio held court at a table accompanied by his mother, while Booksmart costars Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein chatted with Maya Rudolph and best-actress winner Renée Zellweger posed for pictures with fans. The man of the night, however, was Brad Pitt, who was mobbed by friends and fans before ducking with Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino.

By around 10:30 p.m. many of the night’s biggest names were making their way back down to the red carpet, a chocolate Oscar party favor in hand. It was a cold and blustery night in Los Angeles—the heavens had opened just an hour before the show, leaving the walkway squelching with each step—so Shia LaBeouf made a stop at the espresso station on the way to the limo-pick-up area, where he joined Parasite director Bong Joon Ho. It had been a remarkable night for the Korean filmmaker, and as he and the cast of the film—fours Oscars in hand—piled into a party bus to take them on to their next stop, a cheer went up from the assembled crowd.
