Here’s How I’m Waving Goodbye to My All-Black Wardrobe This Winter

“Colors are life,” says Donatella Versace. “Anywhere you see colors, there’s an intrinsic sense of joy.” True as that may be, over the years as a seasoned pavement-pounding Manhattanite, I’ve forgotten how to wear color. In the winter I tend to adopt a mostly black wardrobe—think plenty of monochromatic Celine boots and A-line knit dresses—and somehow always reserve my more colorful pieces for vacation. A Missoni printed top in Palm Beach? Yes, please! A green graphic-print caftan tossed on over jeans in Tulum? Why not! Yet wearing these pieces in New York? No, thank you.
Then, at the Marc Jacobs spring show this September, I watched models strut down the runway clad in a kaleidoscope of hues. (Magenta power suits! Orange floral dresses!) I began to consider slipping on a pair of those canary yellow pants. It makes sense that a jolt of bright color in mid-February would help boost my mood; so why not bring a little of my getaway style to my everyday style? Here, 13 items I’m incorporating into my wardrobe this winter—and hopefully making Donatella proud in the process.
