Art and Artists Aplenty: Inside The MoMA’s Annual Party in the Garden
Under a faint wave of smoke that would later envelop the entire region for days, artists, patrons, gallerists, art dealers, and friends of The Museum of Modern Art gathered in the museum’s sculpture garden for its annual “Party in the Garden.” Artist Ed Ruscha and sculptor Barbara Chase-Riboud were honored alongside MoMA trustee Marlene Hess and philanthropist and President of the Ford Foundation Darren Walker. Chase-Riboud’s work is currently on display in conversation with works by the late sculptor Alberto Giacometti in The Encounter, while Ruscha is set to exhibit at the MoMA this fall.
Supergroup MUNA stole the show with a lively headlining performance at the after-party, followed by DJ sets by Coco Breezy and Romy, famously of The xx.
The not-your-grandmother’s-garden-party was well attended by the industry’s top gallerists and dealers, including Larry Gagosian, Linda Goode Bryant, Jeffrey Deitch, Matthew Marks, friends and patrons Geraldine Guyot-Arnault and Alexandre Arnault, Gayle King, Karlie Kloss, Diane Sawyer, Steve Martin, Sarah Arison, Dasha Zhukova, Tamara Mellon, and, of course, artists of all mediums. Among the latter set were Joan Jonas, Jeff Koons, Lorraine O’Grady, Glenn Ligon, Anna Weyant, Rashid Johnson, Adam Pendleton, Vija Celmins, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Louise Lawler, Simone Leigh, Brice Marden, Ming Smith, and Mickalene Thomas.
