Wuthering Heights is a dark and gothic tale of destructive, obsessive, conflicting romance. The turbulent story of Cathy and Heathcliff has permeated pop culture. Margot Robbie, who plays our Cathy, is embarking on a press tour with a wardrobe set to rival her Barbie run—and she’s already referencing another world axis-shifting love story.
Stepping out last night for the Los Angeles premiere of Wuthering Heights, Robbie—styled by Andrew Mukamal—wore a Schiaparelli couture gown, made custom from the spring 2026 couture show offering that just debuted in Paris. While on the runway the dress was blue and black with a trompe-l’œil design, Robbie’s look leaned into more Victorian-era flourishes, with a laced strapless bodice and an onyx and scarlet red gradient petal skirt, striking colors which borrowed from other styles in the show.
The finishing touch, however, was the jewelry: Elizabeth Taylor’s iconic heart-shaped Taj Mahal diamond set in a Cartier necklace. Famously, the necklace was gifted to Taylor by her two-time husband Richard Burton over five decades ago for her 40th birthday. It’s one of the most iconic pieces from the storied fine jewelry collection of the late Hollywood legend, rich in romance and history—perfect to kick off the Wuthering Heights tour.
The opulent heart-shaped pendant, mounted in jade with a custom gold, ruby, and diamond chain, has an inscription in Parsee that reads: “Love is Everlasting,” as well as the name of Nur Jahan, who was the first woman to receive the jewelry as a gift from her husband, the Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahangir.
The jewels were passed down to their son, Shah Jahan, who gave it as a gift to his own wife, Mumtaz Mahal. When she passed away four years later, the-then emperor commissioned the Taj Mahal mausoleum as a tribute. The monument, then, inspired the diamond’s name.
Later, Cartier acquired it. Originally set on a traditional Indian silk cord, Cartier’s in-house designer Alfred Durante later created a gold and ruby chain, studded with rondelles, and tassels. In 1972, Cartier president Michael Thomas showed the necklace to Burton and Taylor at Kennedy Airport’s International Hotel—the couple were set to take a holiday, and Burton had asked Cartier for gift ideas for Valentine’s Day and Taylor’s birthday on February 27. Burton secretly purchased and surprised Taylor with the piece during her 40th birthday celebrations in Budapest—an emblem of their own intense, epic love.
The piece sold for $8.8 million in December 2011 as part of a larger sale of Taylor’s estate, breaking records for Indian jewels at the time.
While the trend for Old Hollywood aesthetics on the red carpet shows no sign of slowing down, this felt like a poignant tribute to another culture-defining romance, and augments some of the speculations about the tone and direction of Emerald Fennell’s film: said to not just be a retelling of Emily Brontë’s gothic novel, but a highly-stylized, subversive tribute to dramatic love affairs and lovelorn obsession. A first look at the costumes from the movie, too, hint at the kind of fantastical fever dream we’re going to get: gleefully mixing historical references with glitzy modernity.
Robbie wore the necklace with custom diamond earrings by Lorraine Schwartz, as well as a Fred Leighton 19th Century ruby and diamond ring.
We always knew Margot Robbie’s press tour wardrobe was going to be bombastic—move over Barbie, Cathy is here.
