When you’re planning your next vacation and it comes time to choose a hotel, you’ll probably check out some reviews on TripAdvisor, see how close it is to the center of town, how big the rooms are, and if they offer breakfast . . . but it’s worth a deeper dive. Are the room’s views of the city epic? Does the guestroom design make you stop and take notice? Is the breakfast bordering on food porn? Essentially, how Instagram-worthy is it? Evoking a sense of city nostalgia in the heart of the Deschutes National Forest, the 11-room lodge transformed by the team behind Portland’s Ace Hotel is a convivial hideaway, less than three hours from Portland and less than an hour from Bend. You can now book a lakeside or rustic cabin, but get ready to document the property’s stately timber lodge: Marked with a striking S and L logo at the entrance, the main hangout has a one-of-a-kind, hand-carved door with a Native American wilderness scene that melts into the natural surrounds. Originally built as a motel in the 1960s to accommodate the tourism boom from the Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley, Coachman brings a new echelon of chic to this enclave, previously known more for its casinos than its design properties.
