Winter Is Coming—Is Your Makeup Bag Ready?

Despite the fact that it was nearly 70 degrees in New York over the weekend, I have finally completed my fall wardrobe changeover. It took almost two weeks to swap out the gossamer fabrics and summer dresses that have hung in my closet since May with the contents of stealth storage containers filled with sweaters, heavyweight blazers, and my prized coat collection, but I am now prepared for whatever polar vortex may or may not be coming my way. Settling into my vintage furs and 3.1 Phillip Lim crushed-velvet boots has made me acutely aware of one grave oversight, however: My trusty Clé de Peau concealer color-matched to summer’s tan should have been packed away with my sleeveless jumpsuits.
“YES,” makeup artist Daniel Martin tells me in caps-lock when I ask him whether I should update my winter makeup wardrobe along with my clothing and accessories. He specifically calls out complexion-evening products as the first thing to be updated, as skin tones tend to lighten around the time the clocks turn back. But going from, say, an ocher concealer to a lighter shade of beige is only the first step in winterizing your beauty routine. Here, Martin breaks down his top five tips for getting your makeup bag ready for the new season.

“You definitely need to adjust your concealer and foundation as we get into the cooler weather,” says Martin. [Editor’s note: Swatch along your chin in natural light for the best shade-matching results.] “And as we’re dealing with indoor heating that tends to be much dryer than usual,” he continues, “make sure to focus more on foundations and concealer formulas with moisturizing features,” like the cocoa seed butter in RMS Beauty’s “Un” Cover-Up or the hyaluronic acid spheres in Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Foundation.

“To even out skin tone in the winter, use color correctors, like green to neutralize redness—around the nose, on a pimple, and even on the outer corners of the eyes,” explains Martin. A peach shade, such as the one in NYX Cosmetics’s Color Correcting palette, will neutralize dark circles and also brighten up medium complexions under foundation.

“You can still wear bronzer to add warmth in the winter, but I would recommend using a liquid bronzer, like Dr. Hauschka’s Translucent Bronzing Tint, instead of a powder—and mixing it with moisturizer to cut down the pigmentation,” says Martin. “This way, you get a bit of a sun-kissed glow, but not too much depth.” An apricot luminizer, like Dior’s Flash Luminizer Radiance Boosting Pen, is also a good way to “cheat” glowing skin, he reveals. “Just dab on the top of the cheeks, the bridge of your nose, and the cupid’s bow of lips to mimic warmth, without looking too orangey.”

Deep aubergines and blue-based crimsons, like Lipstick Queen Velvet Rope in Black Tie—rather than brighter, orange-tinged shades of scarlet—tend to look great during the winter months, Martin notes. “When wearing these kind of statement lipsticks, though, keep eyes neutral,” he adds, recommending a palette of beiges, taupes, and rose-gold shimmers.
