How Staud and Jeffrey Deitch Kicked Off Frieze Los Angeles
The Staud headquarters, otherwise dubbed the Staud House, isn’t a regular office; it’s a cool office. It’s a quaint yet elaborate abode set just off the glamorous Sunset Strip, and perched atop a West Hollywood hill. On Wednesday evening, it served as the backdrop for a night celebrating the brand during Frieze L.A. (a week dedicated to the arts), with a dinner hosted by Sarah Staudinger and George Augusto alongside gallerist Jeffrey Deitch. In attendance, there were a handful of cool kids and fashion and art enthusiasts alike, including Mark Bradford, Jon Zeiders, Ari Emanuel, Iris Apatow, Odeya Rush, Este Haim, and Vince Staples.
Re-outfitted for the night to marry the worlds of the Californian brand and Connecticut-born art dealer, there was a display of the brand’s Spring runway presentation in one room and an impressive seafood spread set in front of a clam ice sculpture in another. The dinner theme harkened back to a sardine motif used throughout Staud’s latest collection, with scallop crudo, clams, and woven boquerones as just a few offerings on the menu.
Off to another corner of the house was the main attraction—five one-of-a-kind installations of Staud’s Super Moon Bag, reimagined by artists Isabelle Albuquerque, Karon Davis, Cheyenne Julien, Ariana Papademetropoulos, and Emma Webster, each available for auction with proceeds set to go toward a charity of the artist’s choice. The curation of artists was, of course, thanks to Deitch. “He’s a legend in the art world,” Staudinger said. “And shows no sign of slowing down.”
If not cozied in the living room around a grand, color-blocked tile coffee table, or tucked away in the room’s breakfast nook, guests spent most of the evening out in the garden area of the property where there was a hugging pottery station, a bar and plenty of space to lounge and mingle. The night had all of Staudinger’s hallmarks of a good party—“A great mix of people, an unfussy, incredible menu, beautiful lighting, and of course great music.”
