Stella McCartney Wants Us to ‘Stella-brate’ Her Sustainably Focused Pop-Up Shop at Bloomingdale’s

Stella McCartney has always given us a reason to celebrate. Since founding her label in 2001, she has worked hard to embed sustainability into the foundation of her design practice. But today, McCartney delivers us a place for this revelry: at Bloomingdale’s Manhattan flagship on 59th Street, which just unveiled the pop-up shop “Stellabration,” curated in part by the British designer.
“The shop has our Yoshitomo Nara collaboration that I am obsessed with. It’s got our swimwear and our sunglasses made with the bioplastics that we have been developing. Lots of amazing, sustainable products,” says McCartney. “So I am thrilled.”
The well-timed pop-up (on through May 17) is filled with an array of ready-to-wear, accessories, home, and beauty and wellness items from both Stella McCartney and other eco-conscious brands—a collection of things both future-facing and fashion-forward. Take McCartney’s Falabella bag, for example, made with a vegan vegetable coating and recycled lining from ocean plastics, like fishing nets or plastic bottles. Each one of the Stella McCartney items featured in the shop are vegan and PVC-free too.
“Thinking about the future of fashion is what drives and sustains me in all of my work,” McCartney explains. “Even in these crazy times, we still need to push forward in the fashion industry. I want to fight for everything I believe—to be great about what we do at Stella.”
Responsible luxury is Stella McCartney’s identifying mark; each season the designer gives us pieces as elegant as they are responsibly made. “We want people to know that they are buying into something that, at its core, is good for the planet,” McCartney explains. “Probably, people won’t even notice. They go in and the shop has got all of our vegan bags, all of our vegan shoes. They probably will walk away not even noticing, which is part of the thrill.”
While the appetite for more sustainable goods grows larger with each passing day, sustainability is about everyday actions just as much as it is about spending power. “I worked with my family on a campaign called Meat-Free Mondays,” says McCartney. “If you give up meat one day a week, it is equivalent to giving up your transport for a whole week. Reducing your meat intake is possibly one of the best things you can do.” To help spread the word, she’s also added the campaign’s accompanying cookbook, Meat-Free Mondays, into Stellabration.
