Don’t Call Them Ingenues: Sofia Carson, Kaitlyn Dever, and Millicent Simmonds Came Out to Teen Vogue’s Young Hollywood Dinner 

The week leading up to the Oscars in Los Angeles is a flurry of star-studded breakfasts, lunches, and dinners celebrating the industry, but few focus exclusively on Hollywood’s young talent. So, at Teen Vogue’s annual Young Hollywood dinner—hosted last night at the San Vincente Bungalows in partnership with Revlon and AGL—editor in chief of Lindsay Peoples Wagner gathered together a group of rising stars who are committed to changing popular culture for the better and representing disenfranchised communities.

“Last February we threw a big red carpet–style event, but this year I wanted to do something a little bit more intimate,” said Peoples Wagner as she surveyed the scene. “I love really connecting with our Young Hollywood class because they are so thoughtful and intentional about the work they do. This is an event where they can sit and chill and talk to people and not have to be on the whole time.”

The atmosphere certainly felt like a dinner with friends rather than an industry mixer as actor and 2020 cover star Kaitlyn Dever cozied up on the fireside couch with her Unbelievable costar, and class of 2019 Young Hollywood face, Danielle MacDonald. “This is my first awards season and it’s been so exciting to be a part of it, but it is actually very tiring,” said Dever, who had just touched down from London after attending the BAFTAs. “I used to judge people for going on about how exhausting it is, but I get it now.” Meanwhile, Sofia Carson, who had just been announced as the new face of Revlon, and Millicent Simmonds posed for photos with Lexi Underwood and Kelvin Harrison Jr. Paris Jackson, the face of AGL’s campaign, also made a quick drop-in before guests were seated for a leisurely meal of Israeli salad, grilled salmon, and the Bungalow’s famous fudge.

Discussion over dinner was lively, with Miami native and Disney star Carson waxing lyrical over Demi Lovato, Shakira, and J.Lo’s jaw-dropping Super Bowl performances, while Grace VanderWaal and Graham Verchere shared a few raucous jokes. As the evening drew to a close, A Quiet Place star Simmonds, who attended with her mother and sign language translator Emily, summed up the mood of the assembled rising stars: “Be true to yourself and tell that truth with confidence. And don’t worry about what other people think too much.”
