Some trends come and go quicker than the blink of an eye, but every now and then, the fashion gods give us one with a staying power that transcends time. The tie-dye shirt phenomenon is the perfect example. Not only has it proved its longevity since coming on the scene in the late 1960s, but more recently, brands like Prada, The Elder Statesman, and Collina Strada have helped to amplify tie-dye’s appeal. In this current iteration of tie-dye, the playful pattern has seemingly crossed-over into neutral-territory—it’s even been embraced by the most dedicated of minimalists. Like Virginia Smith, Vogue’s fashion director, who can be seen in a short clip for The Get on Instagram, explaining that “Tie-dye is the print for the non-print person.”
The design that she (and everyone else) is loving right now is a nearly sold-out cashmere knit by Gabriela Hearst. Even with a swirl of plum, cerulean, and olive hues, somehow, the top maintains that easy-going-feel of a modern-day wardrobe staple. “A well-placed touch of tie-dye is just as essential as a classic trench or a well-worn pair of vintage jeans,” explained Steff Yotka, Vogue’s fashion news and emerging platforms editor.
