Mesh Goes Off the Grid at Milan Fashion Week

Tracing the high-low-high evolution of mesh in fashion from Hollywood to the street and on to the runway.

The spring shows in Milan found Donatella Versace playing with the transparency trend in a way that was a bit off the grid, layering graphic and geometric pieces over Miami Beach–style pastels. It’s a fresh take on mesh, whose use goes beyond accessories like fishnet stockings and hat veils, as **Madonna’**s dressed-down tank and Ava Gardner’s glamour-girl dress show.
