22 Reasons to Dress Like You’re on Vacation, Even When You’re Not

There’s no denying the joy of wearing something fresh and summery on a hot day, whether you’re on a tropical island or riding the MTA. There are certain resort wear pieces that make you feel like you’re on vacation, even if you’re not.
Take it from Vogue’s Commerce Director, Julie Tong, who couldn’t resist acquiring (or “indulging in,” as she called it) a tropical floral sarong ahead of a weekend trip to upstate New York. “While it’s only three hours from my apartment in Brooklyn, I still wanted to make myself feel like I’m on vacation,” she said. “Thus, to set the mood, you need the right attire.” Fashion and style writer Christian Allaire, another vacation-outfit optimist, has decided that his summer wardrobe “will be all about dressing like I’m on vacation, even if I’m not.” I find myself using the same strategy, even when it comes to dressing for the office. There’s nothing like a flip-flop and suit trouser pairing or shell necklace-button down shirt combination to make you feel like you’re OOO.
There are no rules against wearing resort wear only when visiting a resort. In fact, “summer in the city” is an aesthetic street style stars have adopted well, mixing crochet tops with jeans or carrying large beach basket totes when there’s no beach in sight.
Whether you’re traveling to far-flung destinations or not, you can certainly bring the vacation to you wherever you are. You shouldn’t feel like you can only reserve tropical prints, linen trousers, or sarong skirts for those limited and cherished days actually spent on vacation. Why not make use of them all summer long instead? There‘s plenty of wonderful resort wear pieces and vacation-inspired outfits to wear anywhere while going nowhere, no matter what your plans may be.
