Inside, guests poured into the rotunda of the former opera house. Flutes of Champagne circulated the room as the eclectic multitude mingled and whispered in anticipation. The festivities began with a spotlight on Naomi Campbell in a box high above the crowd. In her regal manner, the model read an enigmatic poem about darkness and dreams.

With theatrical relish, the box directly across from Campbell illuminated to reveal Gigi Hadid, causing guests to whip their heads as if they were watching a tennis match. Hadid introduced the night as a celebration of The Tour ’23, a documentary-style film that serves as a reinterpretation of the brand’s fashion show. The film, designed to “champion women on a global scale,” focuses on the stories of the VS20—a group of 20 creatives from around the world as they created four curations from Bogota, Lagos, London, and Tokyo alongside the brand’s collection.

“Tonight, we introduce you to our VS20,” Hadid said. “This film is theirs.”

Guests watched a 12-minute clip of the film, which balanced stories of the global artists and artisans with typical Victoria’s Secret bravado. It reflected the company’s mission to champion diversity and authenticity rather than the glamour and artifice with which it was once synonymous.

Another return to form proved to be the surprise performers. Following in the footsteps of the Spice Girls and Taylor Swift, Doechii and Goyo gave electrifying sets.

In a VIP section beside the stage, longtime VS veterans danced and laughed together as the music blared. Candice Swanepoel, glittering in a gold mini dress, looked as magnetically movie-starish as she did during her first trot down the VS catwalk in September of 2007. “It feels amazing to celebrate women this way,” Swanepoel said. “It is like the best girls’ party ever.”

Lily Aldridge, elegant in a black suit, agreed. “It feels so good to be back. It’s my tenth show and I’m honored they asked me back.”

The involvement of Aldridge, Swanepoel, Campbell, and others cemented the night as a homecoming as well as a restart.

The Tour ’23 will be available on Prime Video on September 26.
