Virgil Abloh's New Home Collection For Ikea Is Functional—And Funny

Today, Ikea finally announced that its much-anticipated collaboration with Virgil Abloh will be available in stores on November 1. Called MARKERAD (“marked“ in Swedish), it displays Abloh’s distinctive style of minimalism—simple colors and clean lines, doused in ironic and intentional design interruptions. (This is the guy who designed an it-bag with giant holes,, after all.)

Think classic Windsor chairs, but with built in door stops on the bottom. Or a white, numberless clock with a face that says “TEMPORARY.” A doormat, made of green turf, reads “WET GRASS,” and a toolbox reads “HOMEWORK” (get it?). A mirror looks like a mirror, until you notice a small, intentional crack in the corner.

His wall art, a light-up Mona Lisa, plays with the idea of accessibility and art: while Da Vinci’s version is shielded behind glass at the Louvre, priceless, you can get Abloh’s for $99. (And, with an USB port, his masterpiece can also charge your iPhone. )

Abloh also riffs on the behemoth Swedish furniture-maker itself. His rug, designed to look like an IKEA receipt, makes the once-throwaway item one of permanence. There’s also a little Easter Egg in the nylon fine print: the postcode listed is that of the first IKEA store in Sweden.

Other items include a glass door cabinet, a daybed, and a wooden table. Many have Abloh’s signature poppy tag—also seen in his Off-White furniture line, which debuted this summer.

“I’m really glad that MARKERAD is now ready to meet with people and I look forward to see how these everyday objects will enter people’s homes and hopefully add an emotional value to them,” Abloh said in a statement. ”Because that has been the ethos of the whole collection. In the same way you might hang a piece of art work on your wall, art can bleed into objects like a chair, table or rug. That was my initial problem to solve when creating this collection together with IKEA.”
