Watch Cindy Crawford, Kendall Jenner, and More Discuss Their First Vogue Covers
Released on 08/23/2017
This is, I believe, from my mother s archive.
So, this would be my mom writing my name, Cindy Crawford,
as if she could forget.
When I first saw this cover, I was so excited,
and I went to the magazine place.
I took it up to the lady, and I was like,
just put it down.
She was just like,
Do you know you have three of the same magazines, honey?
And I just wanted her to say, It s you on the cover,
and she never did.
It s kinda like when that guy knocks on the door
and you ve won the million dollar sweepstakes.
When I first even understood what fashion was,
I didn t know that couture was,
I thought couture was a designer.
I was like, ah, this guy does everything.
The first time I saw the September issue
was a little video that we did with my family for Vogue
where we recreated Sixteen Candles at my mom s house.
That was actually a genuine reaction at the end.
I m not gonna lie,
there was a few phone calls where the team all called me
and I thought it was gonna be the cover of Vogue
and it wasn t.
A lot of times, I was really disappointed.
And this one time, I got this phone call.
It s a little girl fantasy dream of mine.
It s kind of amazing.
It s weird.
For the Marie Antoinette cover, we flew to Paris,
and we shot at Versailles.
That trash bag dress that John Galliano made
was pretty spectacular.
I might have even just been in a robe
and like, gotten into it on the stairs.
It wasn t that it was heavy.
It was just,
that was quite a train.
I freaked out, I think, more than I have ever freaked out
in my whole life.
They said, You re gonna be on the June cover of Vogue.
And I was like, oh my God, and I just couldn t--
I was freaking out.
I d lost control of my body, basically.
I remember having to ring
my publicist over and over again to make sure
that it wasn t like a joke or to just confirm.
But I remember the feeling of just
pure unadulterated joy.
I think by that point, I d been on a few magazines,
but Vogue is the one that you want to be on
because then you feel like you ve done it all.
It was so me, but it was so a new me
and I think that that s what Vogue does.
