Gwen Stefani and Punk
Released on 05/16/2013
It s strange cause I would never consider myself
punk at all.
(exciting guitar music)
I was really anti-fashion and really anti-mall.
I mean I grew up in Orange County.
I didn t know about Vivienne Westwood.
I didn t know about where punker pants came from.
I liked it. I knew that it represented me
and it made me stand out and it made me different
from what s goin on at the mall.
But I think the funniest story is Just a Girl had come out
and we were gonna be doing our next video for Spiderwebs.
I didn t have a stylist or a makeup artist.
It was nothing. It was just, you re on your own.
So I was like, oh I really wanna wear plaid punker pants.
I was really excited about it.
So I went to Melrose to try to find a top and I stumbled
upon this store that had all these amazing corsets.
They were all lined up on the wall.
They looked like little works of art.
I was like, Oh my god that s my dream
if I could get one of those.
And I really saved my money up and I bought it. It was $800.
For me at that time I would never be able
to spend that.
But I was like, I don t care it s my video.
It s my one chance, can we get it?
There it is.
This is Vivienne Westwood. I had no idea.
I didn t even know who she was.
I was drawn to her without even knowing the history.
And I just got so lucky to be eventually able
to meet Vivienne Westwood and have her make a dress for me.
I feel so connected to her,
and I feel like when I wear her it fits me so well
and it s everything that I love.
It s super traditional but it s super undone and punk rock.
And I love that clash of feminine and masculine.
It s everything that I love so it s just such a crazy story
that I would actually buy the corset
before I knew what I was actually buying.
