I don t tend to pick a safe shoe.

I tend to pick something that I can have fun with

and something a bit more statement.

and I m the accessories editor for jewelry at Vogue.

One of the things I love about these shoes

is that the ankle strap, which is metal,

is actually inspired by a broach

that Alexander Wang found in the archive,

as he was starting to build his collection

for the house of Balenciaga

and the border of this broach had a coil around it,

which almost looks like a telephone cord

when it s made larger.

I think that accessories are where you can play

and where you can be really whimsical

and take risks and try things on.

So, I ve never been one to play it safe.

I remember in middle school,

I got teased for wearing a leopard print coat

and I didn t understand why it was cooler

to not be wearing a leopard print coat.

So, if I have a motto,

it s that sense of humor in fashion

is of grave importance.
