The Modern Chignon

Here’s a novel concept: Hair that looks as good with a fuzzy oversize knit by day as it does with a plunging black Le Smoking by night. In today’s beauty video, Sam McKnight crafts a low, loose, side-parted chignon that conveys just the right mix of pulled-together chic and effortless style.

The look we ve done on Julia today

is a modern, easy chignon.

I put a low part in her hair

and I pushed it over her forehead a little bit.

I tucked it behind one ear.

I ve layered the texturizer spray

in through Julia s hair.

Sprayed everything from roots to ends.

I m going to sweep her hair across her forehead.

Patch it in a low pony.

The position of the ponytail decides

where the chignon will go.

I m just doing a very loose braid.

Fastened that at the back.

I then loosened up even more

so it was kind of coming apart a little bit

but not quite enough to make it fall apart.

I ve used then end of this braid to cover the elastic.

And then it gets pinned.

Gently lift it up and then fold it back on itself

and fix with a few pins.

Quite beautiful when the ends

are just gently unfinished and soft.
