Last Week, Stars Chose Extraordinary Fashion on Both Ends of the Spectrum

With the Venice Film Festival and New York Fashion Week just around the corner, the world’s best dressed appear ready for drama of both a minimalist and maximalist stripe.

Hollywood heavyweights led the clean-chic brigade, embracing a less-is-more, quasi-Nineties aesthetic. Michelle Pfieffer and Andie MacDowell showed precisely how it’s done: the former in a camel suit from The Row, sharply tailored, purposely severe, and intriguing on a slinky legend; the latter in a sleek white sheath from Toni Matičevski with a cunning leg reveal.

Simplicity isn’t for everyone, and some of the week’s best fashion moments came when stars chose to be gleefully over the top. On her new series Carnival Row Cara Delevingne plays a fairy, so it was fitting that she brought a sense of fantasy to her Los Angeles premiere in Iris van Herpen couture. Meanwhile Chloë Sevigny arrived at Dover Street Market’s Los Angeles flagship for her fragrance launch in a dainty pastel quilted mini-dress from Miu Miu. Accented with Sarah Aphrodite bracelets covered in dangling florets and a fiery red lip (her La Bouche Rouge collaboration) the look was sexy, irreverent, and utterly her.

The prize for vibrant self-expression this week goes to Ezra Miller who graced an Urban Decay event in Seoul in clashing Kaffe Fassett florals from Coach. Miller, who swaggered onstage in patent platform boots and captivated the crowd, has been a driving force in the evolution of the male red carpet star. Unburdened by gender constructs or old ideas, he wears whatever he pleases to the delight of fashion fans everywhere.
