Some say fashion is in distress, but based on the styles both on and off the runways at the spring 2023 menswear collections, it’s looking more like a state of undress, to me. This season s street style was all about bareness: bare arms, bare midriffs, just… bare it all. Not since the heyday of Helmut Lang have we seen this many tanks tops. If it wasn’t a chopped up and reworked singlet, showgoers were wearing novelty knits in the form of airy crochets and mesh shirts, or a tailored vest. For the fully dressed, Canadian tuxedos and head-to-toe denim was an omnipresent look, with full leather coming in a close second. Call it the Julia Fox effect.
Menswear has become queerer and more fluid over the last couple of seasons, with flamboyant (faux) furs and skimpy femme items popping up across collections. But that’s not to say that the go-to masc staples have disappeared. Street stylers this month channeled their inner G.I. Joes in camo prints and cargo pants. Another menswear staple making the rounds was the classic necktie, and while most of those looks weren’t quite business as usual, we’ll go out on a limb to say they’ll be office approved. All that said, the looks that linger the most for me are the unique ones. Just do your thing. And stay hydrated, it’s warm out there!

In My Denim Era
From baggy jeans to crystal-embellished suits and cropped jackets, head-to-toe denim was the MVP of the season.
The Summer of A Thousand Tank Tops
The men’s wardrobe staple is suddenly everyone’s styling must-have. Cropped, tied, plain, or in mesh, the tank is an essential.
Basic Training
With the return of Y2K, we were bound to run into some other relics from the era. In come classic camo and cargo pants, but maybe lose the fancy loafers and throw in some combat boots?
One Knit Wonder
Knitwear has been trending lately, an after-effect of the pandemic and the rise of comfort wear. But these funky sweaters, crochet tops, and airy net tanks aren’t stay-at-home material.
Crop Dead Gorgeous
The cropped jackets of Fendi’s spring 2022 menswear definitely turned heads, so it was no surprise that midriffs were everywhere on the streets this season. From jockstraps to classic Calvin Klein briefs, undies we’re definitely out and about.
Doing My Vest
Everyone loves to talk about the reinvention of the suit. Well, this time around, showgoers decided to ditch the jacket and trousers and keep the vest. The one piece of a three-piece that still counts?
Let’s Patch Things Up
Reduce, reuse, recycle. Patchwork was everyone’s favorite sustainable alternative for spring.
Summer… Leathers?
There’s something so wrong about wearing leather in the summer it somehow feels…right? We’re not sure how any of these showgoers stayed cool in the heat, but they certainly looked hot.
All Tied Up
The funny thing about fashion is that sometimes you push so far in a direction you end up right where you started. While most folks have been running away from traditional menswear, some of the season’s coolest-kids found their way back to classic neckties.
