Apple Martin has decided now is the time to come clean: she tried lip filler. Once. However, that was three years ago, and the college student has never been back for a top off. Nevertheless, “everyone seems to think that I have crazy lip filler,” she says. In truth, the secret to the pillowy pout that spawns rumors is a three-step makeup hack, which Martin reveals while sharing her Beauty Secrets with Vogue.
“Lip-filler optical illusion time!” Martin announces. “I line right above my lip. Once you get the natural shape of your lips, just go a tiny bit above it.” After slightly overlining with Refy’s Lip Sculpt Lip Liner, the Self-Portrait brand ambassador dabs on lipstick mixed with a French lip tint. But the illusion wouldn’t be complete without Dr. Dennis Gross’s DermInfusions Plump + Repair Lip Treatment.
“This is my final step,” the 21-year-old says, brandishing the product’s gilded tube. “This is the best lip plumper in the world. I cannot stress that enough.” While other lip plumpers have dried out Martin’s lips, this particular formula “has saved my life,” she raves. “This makes my lips look so gorgeous, and it comes with me everywhere.”
Martin’s preference for lipstick over lip fillers aligns with her general approach to beauty: embrace what you have without trying to overcorrect. Though she’s mastered a skincare routine that starts with Goop cleanser (but of course) and ends with the brand’s retinol eye cream, she understands that skin goes through cycles.
“I’m human—what am I gonna do?” Martin says. “If I have a pimple, it’s not the end of my life.” And in the end, “I think that everyone is still gorge,” she continues. “If you wake up and you have a new pimple, just be like, All right. That’s what today’s gonna be like.”
