Bella Hadid spent the past weekend introducing the concept of Orebella–a line of essential oil-based perfumes with scents inspired by the model’s relationship with her horses and such—to people in London. The several activations began with drinks at the Sessions Arts Club, followed by a meet-and-greet at Shreeji Newsagents the following morning and the launch of an official pop-up store at Selfridges. Hadid cycled through Jimmy Choo pumps, Tom Ford-era YSL heels, McQueen pirate boots, and Maje Fayna slingbacks almost as quickly as the selfies she (willingly) took with fans.
But now that Orebella is, well, launched, the supermodel seems to have come back to earth, or at least returned a little closer to ground level. Yesterday afternoon, Hadid was photographed leaving The Connaught Hotel in nothing ritzier than a second-hand turtleneck–purchased for just $35 from Avias Vintage on Depop a couple years ago—with a pair of selvedge denim Levi’s 501s and sockless Gucci horsebit Jordaan loafers: a more recent iteration of the house’s horsebit-embellished flats that were first launched in 1953. In other words, a shoe not just for this particular season’s tastes, but for the ages.
Which, in context, tracks. For British Vogue’s June cover, Hadid conceded that her interest in capital-F Fashion had dimmed when compared to more important things like politics, health. “I just don’t get dressed anymore,” she said, hinting at plans to offload an 80-crate archive of rare Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier. But while Hadid does still “get dressed”–see: the twinkling John Galliano fall 1997 chainmail dress she wore this weekend to the Sessions Art Club–what she has perhaps realized is that it’s a little easier to move around the world without chasing (or being chased by) a fashion headline. And so, there is now Bella: the supermodel in a nasty heel, and Bella: the 28-year-old in a sensible shoe.
