Barcelona is more than its golden-sand beaches and Gaudí landmarks. Once one of the most important Roman settlements in the western Mediterranean, the Catalan capital is a layered, multifaceted city where a mille-feuille of architectural styles meets cutting-edge gastronomy, rich art and design traditions, and a proud regional culture—all set against Mediterranean scenery that invites explorations beyond the city limits. As one of Europe’s most-visited destinations, it also offers a stellar range of places to stay; it s no surprise that the best hotels in Barcelona are as varied and noteworthy as their surrounding city.
Vogue’s Guide to the Best Hotels in Barcelona:
- For a Calming Oasis: Casa Llimona
- For Gilded Glamor: Hotel El Palace
- For a Local Favorite: Hotel Casa Sagnier

Choose between a locally-owned jewel box of a hotel in the upscale neighborhood Eixample, a posh members-only property with an exclusive pool and beach club, or follow in the steps of Josephine Baker and Salvador Dalí and check into the city’s century-old El Palace Hotel. And while most travelers beeline for areas like El Born and the Gothic Quarter, some of the most charming options are located in lesser-known pockets like the refined enclave of Sarrià or the residential neighborhood of Poble Sec. Here, the top places to stay.
Hotel Casa Sagnier
Few Barcelona hotels are as popular with residents as with tourists, but the 51-room Casa Sagnier—locally owned and housed in a striking building by celebrated Catalan architect Enric Sagnier — is one of them. Its ground-floor bar and terrace, Café de l’Arquitecte, is especially beloved, facing the bustle of Rambla de Catalunya and filling up each afternoon with locals sipping cañas and vermouth. Upstairs, the rooms exude quiet sophistication, with wood-paneled walls, herringbone parquet floors, and standout design accents such as lamps by Sagnier’s nephew, the acclaimed industrial designer Miguel Milá. The most coveted is the Grand Suite, once Sagnier’s study, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the leafy streets. After visiting nearby landmarks like La Pedrera and Casa Batlló, head to the guest-only rooftop for views of Sagnier’s most celebrated work: the Temple of the Sacred Heart on Mount Tibidabo. —Siobhan Reid

Casa Llimona
This petite hotel in the elegant Eixample neighborhood is one of Barcelona’s hidden treasures. Opened last year in a 1890s-era building constructed by Modernisme masters Enric V. Sagnier and Joan Rubió i Bellver, the former palace and ex-residence of Catalan sculptor Josep Llimona has been reimagined as an eight-room guesthouse owned by a prominent local family. Barcelona-based architect Gina Cebamanos Martínez modernized the Art Nouveau building while preserving its most striking features, including the showstopping Noucentista-style fresco in the entrance hall. The best rooms soar to nearly ten feet, with original mosaic floors and private balconies overlooking leafy streets. More than a hotel, it feels like staying in a sophisticated private home. —S.R.

- Address: Carrer de Roger de Llúria, 42, principal, L Eixample, 08009 Barcelona, Spain
SLS Barcelona
Flying in for the annual Primavera Sound music festival in the summer? This new 471-room seafront resort—the SLS group’s first European outpost, just a short stroll from the concert venue—is your backstage pass to an unforgettable stay. While the once-industrial Sant Adrià de Besòs has never been a tourist draw, that may change now that this sprawling property has swung open its doors, unveiling six bars and restaurants, three swimming pools, and the city’s largest rooftop pool and bar—perfect for unwinding between sets. Interiors eschew the typical coastal palette for pops of jewel tones and playful details, from a “flying” chandelier by artist Geraldine Gonzalez to broken-tile mosaics evoking Gaudí’s Park Güell. Squeeze in a workout in the on-site spinning studio or jog along the water to Tres Chimeneas, a brutalist power plant turned cultural hub that now hosts art exhibitions and film screenings. Come happy hour, head to Kyara cocktail bar, where the duo behind London’s world-famous Tayēr + Elementary serves inventive drinks infused with ingredients like rare timur pepper and Omumbiri myrrh oil. —S.R.

Almanac Barcelona
This family-owned hotel at the crossroads of Passeig de Gràcia and Gran Via pulls off what few Barcelona stays can: the intimate scale and service of a boutique property (just 61 rooms and 30 suites), paired with the amenities of a much larger hotel. Case in point: Last year, it chartered a 17-foot yacht so guests could watch the 37th America’s Cup sailing tournament up close. The hotel’s rooftop pool and bar rank among the city’s most picturesque, with sweeping views of La Sagrada Familia and Mount Tibidabo. Meanwhile, the petite spa offers a sauna, fitness room, and treatments that go beyond the usual (think facial acupuncture, Japanese Kobido massage, even chiropractic adjustments).
The hotel’s art program, created in partnership with Barcelona’s forward-thinking Matiz Gallery, features a rotating selection of works by artists such as Alberto Ruiz Villar and Catherina Parra, displayed in the terrace suites. And while you’re just steps from some of the city’s best dining, don’t miss the “green haute cuisine” at Virens, where Michelin-backed chef Rodrigo de la Calle crafts a menu that changes every two weeks, sourcing ingredients from farms beyond the mountains. —S.R.
- Amenities: Rooftop pool, restaurant, bar, fitness center, spa
- Address: 619-621, Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, L Eixample, 08007 Barcelona, Spain
Miiro Borneta
If this swish new boutique hotel bordering Ciutadella Park looks familiar, you can thank interior designer James Thurstan Waterworth. The London-based creative, formerly the European design director of Soho House, has brought the brand’s trademark layered, warmly eclectic aesthetic and transposed it onto this 92-room boutique gem, tucked above the 19th-century rounded archways of Passeig del Picasso. It gives the property the vibe of a private members club, only with rooms decked out in residential-style comforts like timber floors layered with jute rugs and private terraces shaded with greenery.
Start your day with a walk or run along the pathways of Ciutadella Park, which is in the midst of a major glow up (see: the revived Hivernacle greenhouse), or hit the hotel’s excellent subterranean fitness center, where there’s high-tech equipment like curved treadmills and water-powered rowing machines. End the day on the scenic rooftop, complete with a lap pool, a statement sculpture by Argentine-born artist Pilar Zeta, and picture-perfect sunset views. —S.R.

Hotel Neri
For a city as food-obsessed as Barcelona, you might expect a slew of hotels to bear the prestigious Relais Châteaux seal, which honors properties with detour-worthy dining. In fact, there’s only one: Hotel Neri. Spread across two centuries-old palaces in the Gothic Quarter—one dating to the 12th century—this 22-room gem sits just steps from the city’s iconic cathedral. The warm, inviting rooms are dressed in cheerful tones, with globe-like pendant lights, polished wood floors, and views over the medieval streets. The atmosphere is relaxed yet romantic, and the star attraction is chef Alain Guiard’s restaurant, where Spanish classics like croquetas, escalivada, and crema catalana get a refined, inventive twist—with the option to dine al aire libre on the storybook Plaça de Sant Felip Neri. —S.R.

Soho House Barcelona
Tucked between the Gothic Quarter and Barceloneta in the quiet, palm-lined Plaça del Duc de Medinaceli, this 56-room members-only hotel feels like an escape from the buzz of the city—even if it’s in the center of it all. Here, the Soho House brand’s signature English farmhouse-style interiors take on a Catalan twist, with double-heighted volta catalana ceilings, traditional Mallorcan roba de llengües textiles, and whimsical, Gaudí-style ceramic tiles. You ll also spot museum-worthy artworks by Picasso and the contemporary Catalan painter Regina Giménez.
In addition to the usual Soho House amenities—a Cowshed spa, an in-house movie theater, an outpost of New York s Cecconi s Italian restaurant, a state-of-the-art gym with all the bells and whistles—the property also features a spectacular heated rooftop pool that’s open year-round, with candy-striped loungers and views out over the yachts of Marina Port Vell. (Later this year, the brand will open Pool House in the upscale Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district, with a 60-foot outdoor pool and garden, a restaurant terrace, and a gym, among other amenities.) —S.R.

Hotel El Palace
El Palace is the pinnacle of old Barcelona glamour. The 103-year-old hotel, formerly the Ritz, is in the very center of the city in the historic Eixample district, making it a stone’s throw away from every major shopping and tourist destination. With its antique furnishings, hand-painted wallpaper, and sumptuous velvet seating, the hotel’s lobby is the absolute height of decadence—and that only gives way to rooms and suites all named after icons who have called the hotel home, like Josephine Baker, Salvador Dalí, and Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones, who even designed the suite that bears his name.
The roof has an informal restaurant, pool, and an al fresco cinema playing classic films at night for a perfect way to end your evening, while downstairs you’ll find Amar, a restaurant from the former head chef at El Bulli, Rafael Zafra, serving fish dishes inspired by his love for the sea. To further channel the hotel’s old-world charm, guests can visit the Bluesman Cocktail Bar and enjoy a jazz performance and a cigar. But if the swinging jazz scene isn’t for you, ElL Palace is also a perfect place to relax: the rooms feature opulent marbled Roman baths, and if that’s not enough, the Mayan luxury spa has a temazcal sauna which they say is a “pre-Hispanic spa, using volcanic rocks and medicinal herbs to cleanse and restore your mind body and soul.” —Zoe Dubno

- Address: Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes 668, 08010 Barcelona, Spain
Casa Bonay
Many hotels claim to be hubs for the local community, but few actually are. An exception is Casa Bonay, opened in 2016 by local entrepreneur Ines Miró Sans, who called on some of the city’s best-known creatives—furniture designer Marc Morro, artist Luna Paiva, Santa Cole co-founder Nina Masó—to revive a 19th-century townhouse on bustling Gran Vía. Nearly a decade later, the hotel continues to be just as much of a hangout for Barcelonians as visitors, with regular public programming such as DJ sets and pop-up flea markets and a hip new street-level coffee shop serving locally roasted Nomad coffee and French patisserie. Another recent addition: a souvenir shop and bookstore launched by the folks behind Apartamento magazine. While there’s no pool, the hotel has two breezy roof terraces, plus a handful of courtyard suites with private terraces and outdoor showers. —S.R.
- Amenities: Restaurants, cocktail bars, pet-friendly, a café, laundry facilities, free bicycle rentals

Cotton House Hotel
Built in the 1800s as a residence for the aristocratic Boada family, this 83-key mansion exudes Old World grandeur. But unlike some of the city’s other grand dame hotels, it never feels stuffy or outdated. Catalan painter turned interior designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán preserved original details like parquet floors and frescoed ceilings while adding youthful pops of color, ethereal white light fixtures, and floor-to-ceiling mirrors. The effect is clubby yet bright and contemporary. In a nod to the building’s previous life as the headquarters of the city’s Cotton Textile Guild, a former library has been converted into an atelier where guests can have a custom shirt or suit made by the tailors at Barcelona’s famed Santa Eulalia boutique, a family business since 1843. In the summer, the center of the action is the rooftop saltwater pool with views across the Eixample neighborhood to La Sagrada Familia. —S.R.
- Amenities: Seasonal outdoor pool, gym, massage room, on-site restaurant, library, parking garage
- Address: Gran Vía de les Corts Catalanes, 670, Eixample, 08010 Barcelona, Spain
Serras Barcelona
Serras is a jewel of a boutique hotel, consisting of 28 rooms housed in a building that was once Pablo Picasso’s studio, and nestled right in the heart of the Gothic Quarter along the Passeig de Colom, where the bustling city center meets the more relaxed marina strip of bars and restaurants. Though Serras is perfectly located, the real draw is its service. With multiple concierges available to help you at all times—whether recommending restaurants, attractions, and ordering taxis—you’ll really feel taken care of.
Meanwhile, the rooms feature floor-to-ceiling double windows overlooking the Mediterranean, as well as thoughtfully designed touches like rain showers, Diptyque toiletries, and a smartphone preloaded with maps and recommendations for the city. The communal areas are equally lovely, with a rooftop lounge and pool; Informal, a dressed-down restaurant from Michelin-starred chef Marc Gascons; and a swanky lounge on the mezzanine full of art books and games for whiling away the time between your siesta and dinner. —Z.D.

The Barcelona Edition
With branches of the Edition hotels springing up across the globe, it’s become known for its specific brand of sophisticated yet cool luxury. Its Barcelona outpost is no different: With 100 rooms right in the center of the city, the hotel is a perfect home base for an aesthete’s adventure. The walls are covered with work by famous Catalan artists, while the rooms are decorated minimally with wooden accents, and are stocked with Le Labo bath products. But the main draw of the hotel, really, is its incredible location—mere steps away from the Picasso Museum and the Gothic Quarter, it’s the perfect base for exploring the very best of Barcelona.
Even though the hotel has such wonderful surroundings, you’d be forgiven for not wanting to leave. Upon arrival, the Edition’s signature sweeping marble spiral staircase whisks you up to The Punch Room, the hotel’s speakeasy-inspired bar with sumptuous leather seating and a Castillian-style golden pool table. The rooftop plunge pool and bar offer sweeping views and delicious Asian street food, while the basement holds Cabaret, a nightclub and restaurant. Finally, Veraz, the main restaurant, serves a selection of fresh, seasonal dishes—all focusing on produce sourced from the Santa Caterina Market next door. —Z.D.

The One
If you’re interested in a combination of tourist sights and simply experiencing the daily rhythms of spending time in a foreign city, The One is a hotel uniquely located at the intersection of prime tourist Barcelona and the locals’ Barcelona. It’s within walking distance of the Sagrada Familia and the Gothic Quarter, but also puts you in proximity to the residential neighborhoods off of the Avinguda Diagonal—and all of the charming cafes, shops, and tapas restaurants the locals haunt. (The gorgeously decorated and delicious Jewish-Spanish fusion cafe Lady Babka, the local Barcelona designer Gabriel Forsach, the avant-garde boutique Vasquiat, and natural wine and tapas joint Bar Torpedo are all in the neighborhood, as just a few examples.)
The hotel is also one of the city’s more design forward, with interiors imagined by Spanish AD100 designer Jaime Beriestain, and featuring everything from a striking glass-lined open atrium running through the hotel, down to thoughtful details like switches by the bedside for closing the curtains. The rooms are spacious—especially for their reasonable price—and have luxurious separate shower rooms, while in the basement, you’ll find a spa with Finnish saunas, a heated pool, and a treatment area that uses iS Clinical products.
The downstairs restaurant, Somni, is bright, airy, and modern, making for a relaxing spot to enjoy a leisurely breakfast before heading out to explore the city. And for dinner, Somni serves classic Catalan cuisine with a twist. The highlights are a dozen or so takes on the canelon, in which fillings are encased in a tubular vessel reminiscent of the Italian cannelloni. Usually, the shell is pasta, but here the wraps are made of everything from Spanish jamon to vegetables to Japanese-inspired fish. The rooftop, which has a pool and a magnificent view of the city, also houses a laid-back restaurant and lounge that focuses on classic tapas. —Z.D.

Mandarin Oriental Barcelona
The Mandarin Oriental is the first name in luxury for a reason—and its Barcelona outpost is no different. Located on the Passeig de Gracia, the city’s prime shopping street, in an old bank building, its lobby and main rooms mimic the vast and cavernous proportions of their former life as vaults, while its white glass walkway and mirrored gold and amber spaces are conceived by the celebrated Spanish architect and industrial designer Patricia Urquiola.
The rooms are spacious, designed with a combination of natural wood and bright modern furnishings that pair beautifully with the expansive views of Barcelona’s cityscape. Most rooms have a small balcony, while the suites have terraces and outdoor dining areas. On the roof, a bar and restaurant lounge with a shallow wading pool helps you keep cool as you take in the beauty of the city from above. In the basement, you’ll find the sleek oasis of the spa, which includes a long heated swimming pool and a beautifully-tiled steam hammam. Though there’s a full facial and massage program at the spa, more unusually, there’s also a hair spa. Led by Miriam Quevedo Studio, it’s the only of its kind in the city and uses products from the Barcelona-based brand to address scalp health, hair loss, and anti-aging for your hair. (Her science-led haircare products can also be found in the rooms.)
When it comes to dining, the two-Michelin-star restaurant Moments, by chef Carme Ruscalleda, has a menu that changes with the season to explore a different element of Spanish history. This summer, the fare was inspired by a menu created by Salvador Dalí. Finally, a visit to the Banker’s Bar, a cocktail lounge with a ceiling made from security deposit boxes from the hotel’s former life as a bank, is an absolute must. —Z.D.

Primero Primera
One of the city’s best-kept secrets is this family home turned boutique hotel in the upscale Tres Torres neighborhood, a 15-minute metro ride from the center. In 2011, the property’s owners, the Pérez-Sala family, who have lived on the first floor since 1955, converted the old stone mansion into the city’s most soulful stay. The 30 rooms are individually decorated with worn leather armchairs, Persian carpets, and black-and-white race-car photography (one of the owners’ eight children is an ex-Formula One driver), with views of the property’s lush Mediterranean garden and serene pool. A big perk of staying here is access to the hotel’s expert concierge, who can recommend the family’s go-to local spots such as Turó Park and the Oriol Balageur bakery. This part of Barcelona has a much airier, residential feel (picture: wide tree-lined streets and old villas), so it’s perfect for visitors who have already checked off the main tourist sights and want to venture further afield. —S.R.

Hotel Arts Barcelona
You can see the 44-storey crisscrossing façade of the Hotel Arts Barcelona from basically every vantage point in Barcelona—and once you’re inside, the wraparound views allow you to see both the entire city and gaze out at the endless blue of the Mediterranean. The tower, finished in 1994 and designed by Colombian-American architect Bruce Graham, looms magisterially over Barceloneta Beach and is flanked by Frank Gehry’s enormous golden fish statue built for the 1992 Olympics; both symbols of the city’s modern transformation. It’s the perfect destination for people who want the ease of a resort experience and to be in the heart of the action: with some of the most spacious hotel rooms in the city, two pools, close proximity to the beach, a world-class spa, and six restaurants and bars ranging from the two-Michelin-starred Enoteca Paco Perez, to the casual poolside Marina Costal Food, to the Japanese robatayaki restaurant Roka, it wouldn’t be unusual to spend your entire trip on the hotel grounds. There’s even a boutique coffee shop and a shop to buy jamon and Spanish wine as souvenirs—with a speakeasy in the back to try before you buy. A trip to the spa on the 43rd floor is non-negotiable, boasting the most incredibly serene views of the city, best taken in from a private bath and sauna session with floor-to-ceiling windows.
The hotel gets its name from its founders’ love of art, and it shows across the entire hotel. There is an art space in the lobby that works in collaboration with a Madrid gallery and hosts revolving exhibitions, as well as an art-focused suite that features paintings curated by the gallery on display. For suites on the highest floors, there’s also a private club space with a private concierge and gourmet food and wine. The top few floors, however, are reserved for the penthouse apartments, accessible by a separate elevator for extra privacy. The ultra-luxe spaces include multiple bedrooms, cavernous living rooms, space for a private chef, and breathtaking views of the sea and the city, as well as wooden furniture designed by modernist designer Jaime Tresserra—it’s both stylish and serene. —Z.D.

Hotel Mirlo
Situated in the quiet neighborhood of Sant Gervasi, Hotel Mirlo is a small boutique hotel with 16 rooms that sits right next to the beautiful green spaces of Mount Tibidabo and the Gaudí-designed Park Güell. As soon as you cross its threshold, Mirlo is incredibly tranquil—and not only because it is the only hotel in Barcelona where each room has a private steam room. Originally an aristocrat’s villa from the turn of the 20th century—now transformed thoughtfully into a boutique hotel—Mirlo is an oasis away from the noise of the city, yet still just a 15-minute taxi from the center.
The villa’s tennis court has been transformed into a swimming pool, surrounded by a magnificent garden with a burbling fountain for relaxing and reading in. (In fact, The Shadow of the Wind—one of Spain’s most famous mystery novels, and a favorite of Stephen King—is set at the house that became Mirlo, so your vacation reading comes pre-selected.) Meanwhile, the restaurant focuses on local Mediterranean food with a modern twist courtesy of chef Ismael Alonso. Because the hotel is in a more residential neighborhood, you’ll be dining with locals more than other tourists—which is a good sign, because, of course, the Catalonians know Catalonian food best, whether local cava, fish dishes, or arroz. —Z.D.
- Amenities: Restaurant, in-room steam rooms, outdoor pool
- Address: Av. del Tibidabo, 32, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, 08022 Barcelona, Spain

Of course, the hotel features a Nobu restaurant on its top floor, where you can enjoy the restaurant’s signature Japanese dishes with some Catalonian-inspired touches—the black cod croquetas are an umami-sweet revelation. The underground spa, on the other hand, is a soothing cavernous monument to wellness, using Natura Bisse and Seed to Skin products.
The hotel is also to the west of the city center, meaning it’s close to some of the city’s best attractions. Nearby is Montjuïc, the hillside neighborhood that hosts the Joan Miró Foundation, the Mies van der Rohe pavilion, and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya. Plus, the hotel is dog-friendly, so you can take your pets with you on your climb up Montjuïc Hill.
