If there were an award for commitment to a promo tour, surely Cynthia Erivo—along with her co-star, Ariana Grande—would take home the top prize (with Timothée Chalamet’s unconventional promo of A Complete Unknown running a close second, of course). Beginning with last year’s Super Bowl, the duo have been on a year-long press run to support Wicked, culminating with tonight’s Oscars, where Erivo is nominated in the Best Actress category.
At this point, it’s nigh on a miracle that the actor hasn’t simply run out of red-carpet looks, or at least the desire to get dressed up for yet another glitzy bash. But Erivo—together with her stylist Jason Bolden—has continued to deliver, from her Elphaba-green gowns (the custom latex cut-out number by Louis Vuitton, which she wore to the LA premiere, springs to mind) to the major archival pulls she’s been serving up in recent weeks (see the silver Alexander McQueen for Givenchy gown she sported at the SAG Awards). Her nails, too, have been a talking point, with each highly embellished set carefully matched to her looks. Naturally, however, Erivo saved her best red-carpet moment yet for the Oscars, sweeping into the Dolby Theatre in a voluminous, pannier-hipped Louis Vuitton gown with a cut-out collar rising from an elaborate bow-shaped bustier in deep velvet green.
“I love fashion and this was our love letter to the art that I’m in and the people who make it all possible,” the actress told British Vogue of the Schiaparelli gown she wore to the London premiere of Wicked back in November. “We wanted to use this opportunity to tell a story of this piece and my connection to it, and to further introduce people to me as pertains to fashion and style.” Three months later, it’s safe to say: mission accomplished.
Now that awards season has officially come to an end, what will the Wicked 2 promo circuit have in store? With a November release date, it won’t be long before we see Erivo and Grande holding space together on the red carpet once more.
