We asked our editors to give us their take on the perfect boot—which ones stand up to the wear and tear of New York City’s unforgiving streets and which are most in sync with their personal style. Some opted for more practical pairs while others were swept off their feet by pairs that made a statement.
Senior shopping editor Talia Abbas loves the walkable height boost she gets from The Row’s platform—they’re infused with a touch of edge, and built especially for city living. Vogue.com’s digital style director, Leah Faye, is a fan of a chunky heeled boot, which she can t stop wearing with fall dresses and skirts. Meanwhile, senior fashion editor Naomi Elizée opted for a statement-making pair of Maison Margiela Tabi boots that’ll make onlookers green with envy. And let’s not forget all the sultry pointed-toe styles that our editors plan on dressing up this holiday season with a party-ready frock or easy, everyday denim.
Below, a look the most coveted boot styles, worn by Vogue’s very own.
Chloe Malle, editor, Vogue.com
I have been on a long and well-documented wide-calf boot quest and still find that the Margaux knee-high boots are the roomiest and most comfortable for my runners’ calves. I love the new python-embossed version this fall. I also want to try Loeffler Randall’s Lillian boots which are almost wide enough!
Talia Abbas, senior shopping editor
My go-to fall boots are styles I’ve bought over the past few years. I tend to make one big purchase each year and like to put my money towards classics I know I won’t get bored of after a single season. Khaite’s Arizona kitten-heel boots and The Row’s zip platform are just that—ultra-wearable, always on trend, and they make every outfit I put together feel that much cooler.
Libby Page, executive commerce director
This boot is a classic, and has been in Khaite’s offering for a while but still remains relevant. I love the square-toe and slim fit and the kitten heel always makes me feel more dressed up then I actually am, plus no suede equals rain-proof!
Cortne Bonilla, senior shopping writer
Although I’m typically a minimalist-leaning type of dresser, there’s something inherently cool to me about a moto boot—especially the sleeker iterations on the market now. I have these classic Burberry moto boots on my wish list for the winter season—ideal for rainy days, slush and frozen mornings. My ultimate dream pair? Miu Miu, of course. As we all know, suede is in, in, in! And I can’t get enough of it, whether it be in a jacket or on a pair of boots. Suede boots are an easy way to transition a look from daytime to evening, especially when paired alongside leather midiskirts and draped dresses.
Laia Garcia-Furtado, senior fashion news editor
Last year I found an incredible pair of animal print boots at the Khaite sample sale, so I have been waiting for the temperatures to drop so that I can pull them out again. Their kitten heel makes them super comfortable and the slightly pointed toe makes them sleek—and also the perfect companion to very wide flared jeans. A dream!
Naomi Elizée, senior fashion editor
I know I already own over 10 pairs of Tabis, but another one doesn’t hurt!
Madeline Fass, senior fashion market editor
I am loving a sleek pointed-toe heeled boot this season—I’ve been wearing this new style from Toteme already a ton with baggy jeans and slouchy trousers. However, there are a few other styles that have caught my eye including Khaite’s latest python leather boots and these from Neous and Saint Laurent.
Leah Faye-Cooper, digital style director, Vogue.com
A chunky heel with the comfort of a flat is my footwear dream come true. This pair fits the bill—and gets extra points for the edgy zipper detail. I’ve owned these for about two weeks and have lost count of how many times I’ve worn them. I can wear them with most of the fall dresses and skirts in my closet, and they’re extremely easy to put on and take off, which, as someone who lives alone, is extremely important to me.
Willow Lindley, fashion market and collaborations director
I’ll be wearing my Khaite and Doen boots all season. I m about to get my Khaite Davis boots resoled for the third year in a row—that s how much I wear them. I just got these new Doen boots and they are the perfect flat-ish boot for day, or night.
Kiana Murden, senior beauty commerce writer
This fall, I m revisiting classic boot silhouettes — I admittedly have not bought a new pair in years. A good, textured ankle boot is an absolute must to pair with trousers, jeans, and maxi skirts. On the other hand, a sleek knee-high is better suited for a skirt or dress. I m targeting low heel heights here—just tall enough to elongate the leg, but comfortable enough to walk around NYC in.
Irene Kim, production and editorial coordinator, Vogue Runway
The Staud Wally mini kitten-heeled boot is my favorite boot of all time, but I also wanted to get a brown leather pair. Unfortunately, Staud only has brown colorways in suede, but I found a pair similar to my favorite Staud ones from St. Agni. I wore them for the first time on the day of Forces of Fashion and I can say that these are the first pair of shoes that didn’t hurt my heels or my toes and there was no breaking-in needed! The heel is a bit higher than the Staud ones but you can t win them all.
Alexandra Ditch, associate commerce producer
A pair of brown suede boots are at the very top of my fall wishlist this year! I absolutely love the small heel on Staud’s Wally boot, and the sleek square toe of Khaite’s Marfa. Once I finally get my hands on these, I’ll be wearing them to the office with chic midi skirts, and then will be heading straight to dinner from there—they’re perfect for morning, noon, and night!
Laura Jackson, shopping writer
Call it the Miuccia effect, but I simply need a moto boot in my fall and winter wardrobe rotation. These from Ganni are just stompy enough, pairing well everything from great dresses to miniskirts. And for an under $1,000 price point, who could ever deny their total closet appeal?
Concetta Ciarlo, associate manager of events
Boots always have been, and always will be, my favorite shoe. For lack of a more eloquent choice of word, they’re just downright cool. My preference in height is knee-high because they’re the perfect length to wear with skirts and dresses or slide under my favorite pairs of baggy jeans. My go-to boots in rotation are the Remy knee boots from Reformation. Now let’s talk about cowboy boots: love ’em or hate ’em, black cowboy boots read more Rock ’n Roll rather than Coachella costume (which is just how I like it).
Kylee McGuigan, associate production manager
I can’t deny that I’m heeled-boot girl at my core, so I simply cannot resist adding more pairs to my collection. This season, I’m on the hunt for a leather, moto-esque boot, as well as something suede—which seems to be all the rage!
